Have you noticed a new ‘friend’ among the stacks? We recently received this lovely gift from Senator Johnson. Along with the statue came a letter that read:
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
November 19, 2014
My wife Barbara and I have many cherished memories of going with our children to the Vermillion Public Library. It was there that our children’s love of reading blossomed, and ours grew as well.
To honor these fond memories, Barbara and I are donating this statue as a thank you to the Vermillion community.
I received this statue from the School Administrators of South Dakota in recognition of my steadfast support and commitment to education. Literacy plays a critical role in giving children the skills they need to succeed in school and in their future careers. The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library is a place where children and adults can broaden their horizons through books, educational programming, technology, and guidance from library staff.
Over the years, I have proudly displayed this statue in my Senate office in Washington, D.C. It has greeted countless South Dakotans, public officials, foreign dignitaries, and other guests as they visited my office, and it has served as a constant reminder of the importance of education. I am glad this statue has found a new home and hope it will help inspire young readers.
In honor of the Holiday Season, and the growing need within our community, the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library will be accepting food donations in exchange for overdue fees December 1st – 13th. Please bring your bags of donations to the Circulation Desk during our open hours on any of these dates, and we will gladly waive your fees (with the exception of damage/replacement fees).
The Vermillion Food Pantry is particularly in need of donations of soup/chili, tuna or canned meats, jam/jelly, pasta sauces, and boxed meals.
Warmest wishes for a Happy Holiday season!!
We hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday. For many, the long holiday weekend continues, but we are here at the library! We are open our normal hours today, Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and tomorrow, Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. We’ve got tons of great holiday books on display, to assist in your holiday preparations. If it’s DIY you’re looking for, we can help.
In addition, today is Small Business Saturday! Keep those important dollars and resources local by shopping at any of the fabulous small businesses we have here in downtown Vermillion. If you need to shop for gifts, goodies, or decor, there’s no question you will find what you need right here close to home. And then stop by the library and share all the exciting things you’ve found!

Geocaching is a game that reveals a world beyond the every day, where the possibility of a new discovery hides under park benches, in the forest, and probably a short walk from where you are right now. The adventure begins by searching for cleverly hidden containers called geocaches. There are more than 2 million geocaches waiting to be found throughout the world, in more than 180 countries…..for more information see the website: www.geocaching.com
