Retirement Reception for Jane Larson

*POSTPONED* Jane Larson’s Retirement reception has been postponed, due to inclement weather, until Friday, December 9th from 3-6 pm.

The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library staff and Board of Trustees are very pleased to share a planned public reception honoring the retirement of long-time Library Director, Jane A. Larson, scheduled for Friday, November 18th from 3 – 6 pm. After a serious year-long illness, and continuing to recover at home in Meckling, Larson is looking forward to saying a proper goodbye to colleagues and patrons. Jane served the community as Director of the Library for 32 years. In that time, she steered the Library through enormous change and growth, including overseeing a major renovation and expansion of the Library, completed in 2013. Anne Dunham, Friends of the Vermillion Public Library long-time volunteer, is looking forward to thanking Larson. “Jane has been the face of the Library for over 30 years. She has been greatly missed.”
“We’re excited to have this opportunity to thank Jane for her years of dedicated service to the Vermillion Public Library, and for all she achieved while she was here. We encourage friends, acquaintances, and community-members to stop by and visit with Jane during her reception,” states incoming Library Director, Daniel Burniston.
The reception is free and open to the public, and will take place in the Kozak Community Room.
For more information, call the Library Circulation Desk at 677.7060.

Outside the Lines is Here

We are officially Outside the Lines this week!  Don’t miss these two special events:

On Friday, September 16th at 7 pm we will host our next Books & Brews event as a meet & greet ‘Happy Hour’ with our new Library Director, Daniel Burniston!  We invite community members to our ‘Beer Garden’ – in the garden behind the library.  Adults aged 21 and up only, of course.  There will be live music, refreshments, a limited selection of craft beers to sample, and participants are encouraged to bring their own favorites.

And on Saturday, September 17th at 7 pm, join us for our first ever ‘Outside the Library Drive-In Movie Night’ in our parking lot! Patrons of all ages are welcome to view the new, live-action ‘Jungle Book’ with us, and munch on popcorn.  Bring your own chairs and beverages.

These events are a part of Outside the Lines, a global initiative designed to reintroduce libraries to their local communities. From Sept. 11-17, 2016, organizations will host events and campaigns worldwide designed to get people thinking – and talking – about libraries in a whole new way.

Have you ever wanted to learn to play the ukulele? Just love to get together with others and play music?
Beginning with our Fall line-up of programs, the Library is pleased to offer Free Ukulele lessons to patrons aged 7 & up. No musical experience or background necessary; the ukulele is easier to learn than the guitar (and more affordable too). No ukulele? No problem – we will have some ukuleles for you to borrow. These lessons will officially begin on Friday, September 16th at 4 pm, and Saturday, September 17th at 3:30 pm.

The sessions are as follows:
Fridays – 4-4:45 pm (7 & 8 yr olds)
4:45-5:30 pm (9 & 10 yr olds)
Saturdays – 3:30-4:15 pm (11 & 12 yr olds)
4:15-5 pm (13 & up)
These sessions are free, but space is limited! Call or stop by the Circulation Desk to sign up.

He played the ukulele in a Hawaiian band that traveled around the world, as well as playing the ukulele at the 2002 Winter Olympics. He has over 20 years of experience performing and playing the ukulele, and has an entire season of fun curriculum planned that will teach the basic chords, songs, and history of the ukulele. There are even plans to put on a simple recital at the end of the term, which ends December 17th. For more information, feel free to call the Library at 605-677-7060.

Get Outside the Lines with Us

When was the last time you walked into your local library? In recent years, libraries have changed into dynamic centers for engagement to accommodate the growing needs of their local communities. The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library invites the residents of Clay County to experience the library in a whole new way. Come join your community outside the Library as we host two special upcoming events.

About the EBS Vermillion Public Library

The Vermillion Public Library started on January 13, 1902, when about 100 people met at the Masonic Hall in Vermillion, South Dakota to establish a public library. In 1903, funds in the sum of $10,000 were appropriated from Andrew Carnegie, and the building began to materialize. The Library has since been supported by the City of Vermillion, with contributions from Clay County. In 1978 a new library building was built adjacent to the original. We recently completed a major expansion and renovation in 2013.  We currently serve all of Clay County with free library cards that allow patrons to access any of our more than 80,000 books, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, as well as hundreds of electronic resources available through the South Dakota State Library, including downloadable books, movies, or full-text magazine & newspaper articles. Visit our website to learn more – vermillionpubliclibrary.org.

ABOUT OUTSIDE THE LINES

Outside the Lines is a global R-Squared initiative originally designed by Colorado library marketers and directors that gets libraries “walking the walk” – taking action to show communities how important libraries are and how they’ve changed. This weeklong international celebration takes place Sept. 11-17, 2016. Outside the Lines takes many of the concepts discussed at ‘R-Squared, The Risk & Reward Conference’, such as creativity, customer curiosity, culture, community and creative spaces, and puts them into action where they count – in our local communities.
