Cook the Book Returns!

Cook the Book is returning to the Vermillion Public Library!

Do you love browsing through cookbooks or trying new recipes and cooking techniques? The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library is pleased to resume our most popular book club – Cook the Book! On Mondays at noon, beginning on January 22nd and continuing through February 26th, 2018, our tastiest adult program will introduce fellow foodies to new tastes, cooking techniques, and great books about cooking.

This unique book group brings together patrons who love to cook for a shared meal and conversation about cooking. To participate, drop by the Library Circulation desk before January 22nd and pick up a book from our pre-selected assortment of cookbooks. Participants will choose recipes inspired by their chosen books to prepare and share for the first meeting. It will only be necessary to make one regular-sized recipe – no need for doubling! Subsequent meetings will be themed according to the group’s choices.

For more information, drop by the Library Circulation Desk, or call us at 605.677.7060.

December Means Amnesty

In keeping with the season of giving, the Edith B. Siegrist Public Library is pleased to share its intention to offer amnesty to patrons owing fines throughout the month of December, in exchange for donations of food pantry items. The “Forgiving for Giving” campaign will officially kick-off during our annual Holiday Open House Thursday, November 30th, following the Vermillion Chamber and Development Company’s Downtown Parade of Lights, at approximately 6:45 pm.

The “Forgiving for Giving” campaign will collect donations of non-perishable items that will then be distributed by the Vermillion Food Pantry and Evan’s Diaper Bank during the holidays. Patrons who have accumulated overdue fees, with the exception of replacement fees, will be able to have those fines waived in exchange for donations of much-needed items, such as canned meats, canned or packaged soups, canned beans, dried pastas and grains, dried fruits, personal care items, diapers & wipes, etc.

Holiday Open House

The Library extends an invitation to all community members to join them in kicking off the holiday season during our annual Holiday event. Following the Parade of Lights and the lighting of the Platz Christmas Tree, the Library will be open and bustling with festive energy. The Holiday Open House features an opportunity to have pictures taken with Santa Claus, a couple of holiday-themed crafts, as well as tasty treats and hot cocoa. Additionally, we’re pleased to share that, for the second year in a row, we will feature a Holiday Ukulele Concert from 6:45 until 7:30!

Don’t miss the fun. It’s THE place to be after the downtown Parade of Lights and Tree-Lighting ceremony.

It’s Small Business Saturday!

Most of us have heard of Black Friday, but have you heard about Small Business Saturday? It’s an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses and celebrating communities across the country. Since 2010, Small Business Saturday is celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year, you can get out and support the places you love with the people you love on Nov 25.

Small businesses play a key role in helping communities thrive. They can have a handful of employees or be up to 150 employees strong. Very often, the employees of your favorite small businesses know your face, may even remember your name, and may anticipate what you are looking for. They give a neighborhood strength and create vibrant, diverse communities. By shopping or dining at your favorite local places throughout the year, you’re showing your support for small businesses and making a positive impact in your community. In fact, if you spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays in your local economy. If you spend the same at a large business, only $43 stays in the local economy (Source: http://www.civiceconomics.com/projects.html).

This year, join the Friends of the Vermillion Public Library from 10 am to 1 pm as we recognize Small Business Saturday. The Library will serve donuts and Bean coffee during a very special Holiday Preview Sale in Edie’s Book Shop. Those who drop in will be welcome to enter a drawing for one of three special Edie’s prize packs – a VPL tote bag, water bottle, and an Edie’s gift certificate. All proceeds from Edie’s Book Shop sales go right back into Library programs. So many great deals in one place, and a fabulous way to keep it local!

Thanksgiving Closure

Wow – this year is flying by! It’s already nearly Thanksgiving. Please be aware, Vermillionaires, that the Library will be closed in observance of this holiday beginning tonight at 5 pm, through Thursday, November 23rd and Friday, November 24th.

We will re-open for normal hours on Saturday at 10 am.  Considering popping by, and while you’re here, help us celebrate Small Business Saturday by visiting the lovely Edie’s Book Shop on the lower level. Edie’s will have special hours, from 10 am to 1 pm, to showcase some great holiday book deals – don’t miss it!
