Rescheduled Reception

Don’t Forget!

Jane Larson’s Retirement reception has been rescheduled for this Friday, December 9th from 3-6 pm.

The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library staff and Board of Trustees are very pleased to share a planned public reception honoring the retirement of long-time Library Director, Jane A. Larson, scheduled for Friday, November 18th from 3 – 6 pm. After a serious year-long illness, and continuing to recover at home in Meckling, Larson is looking forward to saying a proper goodbye to colleagues and patrons. Jane served the community as Director of the Library for 32 years. In that time, she steered the Library through enormous change and growth, including overseeing a major renovation and expansion of the Library, completed in 2013. Anne Dunham, Friends of the Vermillion Public Library long-time volunteer, is looking forward to thanking Larson. “Jane has been the face of the Library for over 30 years. She has been greatly missed.”
“We’re excited to have this opportunity to thank Jane for her years of dedicated service to the Vermillion Public Library, and for all she achieved while she was here. We encourage friends, acquaintances, and community-members to stop by and visit with Jane during her reception,” states incoming Library Director, Daniel Burniston.
The reception is free and open to the public, and will take place in the Kozak Community Room.
For more information, call the Library Circulation Desk at 677.7060.

Attention Writers!

Are you a writer looking to get published?
Don’t miss this great opportunity to work with an award-winning author & poet, for FREE!

On Saturday, October 1st from 2 -4 pm, the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library is proud to host the Writer’s Workshop: Get Published Now, with Jim Reese. “Get Published Now” is a hybrid writing workshop where participants spend time generating ideas and discussing real methods on how to get published in today’s market. The Writer’s Workshop features an informal conversation with an award-winning working writer / editor / publisher discussing craft, publishing and the writing life.

“Jim Reese … He’s our Mark Twain of this century … Jim writes about the everyday experience, and he, in my view, is therefore America’s poet.”
—Grace Cavalieri, from the Poet and the Poem at the Library of Congress

Jim Reese is an Associate Professor of English; Director of the Great Plains Writers’ Tour at Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota; and Editor-in-Chief of 4 PM Count. Reese’s poetry and prose have been widely published, and he has performed readings at venues throughout the country, including the Library of Congress and San Quentin Prison. His third book Really Happy was published by New York Quarterly Books in 2014.

In 2015 Reese received an Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award, and in 2012 a Distinguished Public Service Award in recognition of his exemplary dedication and contributions to the Education Department at the Yankton Federal Prison Camp. Since 2008 Reese has been one of six artists-in-residence throughout the country who are part of the National Endowment for the Arts’ interagency initiative with the Department of Justice’s Federal Bureau of Prisons.

This workshop is generously supported by the Friends of the Vermillion Public Library organization. The workshop is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Please call to reserve your spot. The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library is located at 18 Church Street in Vermillion. For more information call the Library at 605-677-7060.

Long-Time Librarian Retiring

Shelly Koller joined the staff at the Library in 1991 as the Circulation Supervisor. In her time with the organization she has seen a number of profound changes take place within the Library, from the introduction of digitized records, to the implementation of various state-wide searchable databases, to the major renovation and expansion which took place in 2013. She is one of the most recognizable faces in the library due to her position at the Circulation Desk, and is the staff member with whom the vast majority of patrons interact during their visits. “Jane Larson hired me in the 1991 and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work at the Library. I will truly miss my job, all the wonderful patrons I have met, and the friendships I’ve made over the years.”
Patrons and the public are encouraged to drop by during the reception, which will be held in the Kozak Community Room.

The End is Near!

The end of our exciting Summer Reading Program, anyway.
We will wind down another eventful summer on Wednesday, July 27th at 1 pm, with a participant party out behind the library. Patrons are invited to join in our ‘Cool Down Party’ – an afternoon of water games, pizza, ice cream and prizes in honor of their participation in this summer’s program. Be ready to get wet! Those who wish to attend are asked to reserve a spot in advance by either visiting our website at http://vermillionpubliclibrary.org/2016-summer-reading-program/, or by stopping by the Circulation Desk.

*In the case of inclement weather, the party will be rescheduled!*
