We will host a community discussion on the impetus behind the Sioux Falls Compassion Charter during our March Long Overdue Series event, on Tuesday, March 7th at 7 pm.
Compassionate Sioux Falls is an initiative sponsored by the City of Sioux Falls and other organizations and individuals. Compassionate Sioux Falls encourages community members, businesses, and organizations to act with compassion. This initiative was inspired by the Charter for Compassion – a global initiative that encourages compassion and caring in communities. All communities show compassion, but the compassionate initiatives strive to ensure compassion is an everyday occurrence and is a first thought instead of an afterthought.
We will host Colleen Moran, ADA Coordinator/Assistant City Attorney for Sioux Falls, who will share more about how the Compassion Charter has been operating in their city, and what it could mean for other cities in the Midwest.
We are pleased to host a screening of the documentary Death by Design on Monday evening, February 27th, at 7pm. Please arrive early for best seating.
Consumers love – and live on – their smartphones, tablets and laptops. A cascade of new devices pours endlessly into the market, promising even better communication, non-stop entertainment and instant information. The numbers are staggering. By 2020, four billion people will have a personal computer. Five billion will own a mobile phone.
But this revolution has a dark side, hidden from most consumers. In an investigation that spans the globe, filmmaker Sue Williams investigates the underbelly of the electronics industry and reveals how even the smallest devices have deadly environmental and health costs. From the intensely secretive factories in China, to a ravaged New York community and the high tech corridors of Silicon Valley, the film tells a story of environmental degradation, of health tragedies, and the fast approaching tipping point between consumerism and sustainability.
Looking for little moments of peace?
The Vermillion Meditation group still meets at the Library on Sundays from 2-2:45 pm. Each week is led by a different practitioner, and sessions are open to all. There is even free tea provided by The Bean!
Do you love browsing through cookbooks and trying new recipes or cooking techniques? Do you love socializing and chatting over good food? Cook the Book is a new book club that brings together patrons who love to cook over a meal and conversation about cooking and recipes. You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to participate!
Our first book is Cooked, by Michael Pollan. Each participant will choose a recipe ahead-of-time and prepare it for the first meeting to share; it’s that simple. It will only be necessary to make one regular-sized recipe – no need for doubling. Subsequent meetings after the initial meeting will all conform to a particular food theme, chosen by the group. Books will be available beginning early-January. Please contact the library’s Circulation Desk to sign up and pick up a copy of the book.
Monday, Feb 6th – Mar 27th, 12 pm in the Kozak Community Room
Did you know that we’ve added Monday to our after school program line-up? This Monday features Shannon Schaack, HyVee nutritionist, who will introduce kids to the exciting world of healthy eating (really, it’s so much fun and so tasty!).
2nd & 4th Mondays, 3:30-5 pm in the Kozak Community Room
Needless to say, snacks are included;)
The EBS Vermillion Public Library is considering offering mobile Hotspots for check-out to patrons. We need your feedback to help us determine program and device needs. Please take a moment to share your thoughts with us here:
