In case you hadn’t yet heard, there are reasons to be concerned about the potential future of the arts, humanities, and libraries, due to complete cuts proposed in the current administration’s budget. Please help us preserve funding for our libraries! #saveimls

We will host a community discussion on the impetus behind the Sioux Falls Compassion Charter during our March Long Overdue Series event, on Tuesday, March 7th at 7 pm.
Compassionate Sioux Falls is an initiative sponsored by the City of Sioux Falls and other organizations and individuals. Compassionate Sioux Falls encourages community members, businesses, and organizations to act with compassion. This initiative was inspired by the Charter for Compassion – a global initiative that encourages compassion and caring in communities. All communities show compassion, but the compassionate initiatives strive to ensure compassion is an everyday occurrence and is a first thought instead of an afterthought.
We will host Colleen Moran, ADA Coordinator/Assistant City Attorney for Sioux Falls, who will share more about how the Compassion Charter has been operating in their city, and what it could mean for other cities in the Midwest.
What the newest thing to do at the VPL? Thanks to the Friends of the Library organization, every Friday morning will now feature tasty coffee from our friends at The Bean!
Come on down and enjoy an informal ‘Coffee Hour’ during the relative serenity of our newly expanded hours – from 8-10 am.
Don’t dawdle; we don’t know how long the coffee will last;)
We are pleased to host a screening of the documentary Death by Design on Monday evening, February 27th, at 7pm. Please arrive early for best seating.
Consumers love – and live on – their smartphones, tablets and laptops. A cascade of new devices pours endlessly into the market, promising even better communication, non-stop entertainment and instant information. The numbers are staggering. By 2020, four billion people will have a personal computer. Five billion will own a mobile phone.
But this revolution has a dark side, hidden from most consumers. In an investigation that spans the globe, filmmaker Sue Williams investigates the underbelly of the electronics industry and reveals how even the smallest devices have deadly environmental and health costs. From the intensely secretive factories in China, to a ravaged New York community and the high tech corridors of Silicon Valley, the film tells a story of environmental degradation, of health tragedies, and the fast approaching tipping point between consumerism and sustainability.
