Have you checked out the state library’s new BookFlix site for kids?
It’s a great resource, and of course, FREE!
Just click on the BookFlix link on our eResource page: http://vermillionpubliclibrary.org/ebooks/
Have you ever finished a great book and wanted to find more just like it? Or wanted to help your child find just the right book to read? The VPL now offers NoveList Plus, a helpful resource to help readers match up with the books that are right for them.
The NoveList Plus database connects readers to their next book by making recommendations for what to read next. One of the most popular elements is read-alikes. This feature suggests titles that are ‘just like’ other titles. If you’ve just finished a great book, log into NoveList Plus and find great read-alikes. There are also read-alikes for authors and series. Consider NoveList Plus your one-stop guide to great reading. It contains lists of recommended reads and award-winning books. It covers both fiction and nonfiction titles for all ages from the youngest readers to adults. It also has extra content like reviews (both professional reviews and reader reviews), book discussion guides, curriculum guides, and other book-oriented articles. Book groups and teachers find these resources especially helpful.
Check out NoveList Plus, and NoveList K-8 Plus on our eResources page: vermillionpubliclibrary.org/ebooks/.

Most of us have heard of Black Friday, but have you heard about Small Business Saturday? It’s an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses and celebrating communities across the country. Since 2010, Small Business Saturday is celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year, you can get out and support the places you love with the people you love on Nov 25.
Small businesses play a key role in helping communities thrive. They can have a handful of employees or be up to 150 employees strong. Very often, the employees of your favorite small businesses know your face, may even remember your name, and may anticipate what you are looking for. They give a neighborhood strength and create vibrant, diverse communities. By shopping or dining at your favorite local places throughout the year, you’re showing your support for small businesses and making a positive impact in your community. In fact, if you spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays in your local economy. If you spend the same at a large business, only $43 stays in the local economy (Source: http://www.civiceconomics.com/projects.html).
This year, join the Friends of the Vermillion Public Library from 10 am to 1 pm as we recognize Small Business Saturday. The Library will serve donuts and Bean coffee during a very special Holiday Preview Sale in Edie’s Book Shop. Those who drop in will be welcome to enter a drawing for one of three special Edie’s prize packs – a VPL tote bag, water bottle, and an Edie’s gift certificate. All proceeds from Edie’s Book Shop sales go right back into Library programs. So many great deals in one place, and a fabulous way to keep it local!
Wow – this year is flying by! It’s already nearly Thanksgiving. Please be aware, Vermillionaires, that the Library will be closed in observance of this holiday beginning tonight at 5 pm, through Thursday, November 23rd and Friday, November 24th.
