Effective October 30th, 2017 patrons under the age of 17 will be required to have a library card to log onto public access computers. Guest passes will no longer be issued to users under the age of 17, unless exceptional circumstances apply.

To sign up for a library card please ask for a patron registration card and internet access form to have a parent/guardian complete and sign.

A library E-Card will be available for:
*Parents with children under 7 who are not eligible for a
full library card
*Parents who want their child to be able to use the library’s
public access computers and electronic resources but not
check out physical items.

Introducing Pronunciator

Recently, the South Dakota State Library introduced a new language eresource available to library patrons: Pronunciator. Pronunciator provides over 80 different language courses. There are also 50 English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Instructional methods include oral phrases, flash cards, and learning guides. It also has ProLive, live online conversation classes led by teachers, with 250+ half-hour sessions per week in over 20 languages. Another feature of Pronunciator is the Course Designer module, which allows for the creation of private multimedia language courses in Dakota, Lakota, and over 700 other Native American languages, and for the tracking of student progress within those custom courses. This resource takes the place of the previously available Mango Languages.

Additionally, this program provides access to the additional resource ProCitizen, which is an interactive course to help prepare you for the civics, reading and writing parts of the USCIS Naturalization Test. It provides 100 instructional videos, drills and quizzes. The state library provides separate links for ProCitizen in English and Spanish. Essential Job Functions
1) Schedule, plan and conduct programming in coordination with the Youth Services Librarian, with a focus on young adult programming
2) Requests, organizes and maintains teen programming materials such as games, equipment and snacks
3) Collaborates with schools, teachers and other youth services workers to promote the library and share programming
4) Provides support and assistance with children’s and adult programming as needed
5) Uses social media to promote children’s and young adult library programs and services
6) Composes and submits monthly reports and teen event statistics
7) Helps maintain a comfortable library atmosphere for teens including maintenance of YA area
8) Greets visitors to the library and provides friendly, high-quality customer service to library users
9) Performs circulation duties and procedures including: loaning and returning materials, placing reserves, checking in materials, shelving materials, checking for damaged materials, taking interlibrary loan requests

Education – High School diploma or GED.

Afterschool STEAM at the Library

The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library seeks an after-school STEAM program facilitator. This free, weekly children’s program is designed to help develop and nurture school-aged children’s skills in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The program will resume beginning mid-January 2018, with the Fall semester to be utilized for curriculum module development and existing after-school program review.

The intern must be motivated and well-organized, with a strong interest in the sciences and in working with school-aged children. The Library’s preference is for an individual with science instruction experience, or a student working toward a degree in Education, Early Childhood Development, or related field.

Responsibilities:
• Develop series of short curriculum modules in sciences (electronics, simple robotics, mathematics, coding, etc.) that can later be utilized by Library staff and volunteers
• Engage and lead children in planned activities weekly, from mid-January through end of April, 2018
• Help in creating a safe, welcoming environment for program participants
• Promote activities that build and strengthen STEAM skills and lifelong learning
• Understand and adhere to library policies, procedures and rules

Preferred Skills and/or Experience:
• Background in sciences, technology, engineering, art or mathematics
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Experience working with elementary-aged children
• Creative thinking and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently
• Self-motivated and well-organized
• Dynamic interpersonal skills; tactful, cheerful, enthusiastic, positive, good sense of humor

Start Date:
Fall semester 2017, preferably by September 15th.

Schedule:

Here at the VPL, we’ve also got some workshops cooked up that will help you get the most out of this rare eclipse event! On Thursday, July 20th – as part of our SRP Workshop session – we will lead kids in the creation of a solar viewer. We will also distribute eclipse glasses to all participants. Then again on Saturday, August 12th at 1 pm, we will lead another solar viewer workshop that will be open to anyone in the community. We will have plenty of eclipse glasses to share, so please feel free to drop by and pick yourself up a pair:)

A Special Night of Thanks

The VPL’s first Books & Brews of the 2017 season was an upscale affair held on Friday, June 16th. Past and present members of Vermillion Standard Time were on hand to provide some fantastic, jazzy accompaniment to our formal unveiling of all the recent tech upgrades the Library has received, due to the continued support of the Vermillion Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Vermillion Public Library.


Director Dan Burniston emceed the informal evening of revelry, refreshments, and community, although the thanks expressed were formal and heartfelt. Our community enjoys one of the premier public libraries in the state, due in large part to the dedicated and tremendous support of our partner organizations. This evening served as just one small gesture of gratitude toward all those who work so hard to make us look good!

RBDigital

RBDigital is streamlining its patron interface, as of June 27th. For the first time in the industry, audiobooks, magazines, and eBooks will be available in one easy-to-use app. Other key features include:
– A significantly improved user experience
– App-based patron notifications to help with tech support and engagement
– Faster, easier search
– Exclusive content

RBDigital will be migrating the app and website at approximately 8 pm on June 26th. Unfortunately, patrons will likely experience downtime during the 14-hour migration period. The new app and website will be live by the morning of June 27th.
