Parents and kids attended our 1000 minute party, with fun activities, pizza, and s’mores made in our homemade solar ovens!
The Fizz, Boom, Read summer reading program is drawing to a close. Over the course of the summer, we had over 3000 children and adults attend program events, over 350 folks signed up for the reading program, with over 150 finishing the reading program with 1000 or more minutes read!! In total, over 177,000 minutes were read. Way to go, Vermillion!
For all those readers with book bucks, don’t forget to stop by the Prize Store in the Kozak Community Room, and spend, spend, spend on our fun prizes. You earned it!

We will begin in the Kozak Room for a short program on the basics of birdwatching and a brief review of common birds found in our area. Then we’ll head out on a birding tour to Cotton Park in Vermillion to get a look at some local birds!
Wear comfortable shoes and be ready to take a nice walk….weather permitting!

One Template, Many Cards!

Join Susan Rolfes for an evening of fun creating 3 cards using one card template. We will utilize a variety of card making techniques, (including rubber stamping, detail-cutting, ribbon sanding and layering) to create some basic cards. No experience necessary! Join in the fun!

Learn how to start many of your vegetables from seeds in order to a) jumpstart your garden indoors b) get wider varieties of plants from organic seeds c) save money by growing your own transplants….and much more! This class will provide you with a handout listing all the necessary materials, demonstrate how to mix your own potting soil, give start times and procedures for maximum germination, along with advice for lighting, temperature and fertilization after sprouts occur. Learn how to harden off and transplant for best results.

National Library Week
“Judge Rusch on Judge Kidder”

Judge Art Rusch is a long-time Vermillion resident and avid local historian, having published, “Portrait of a River Town: Vermillion Before the Flood of 1881” in South Dakota History, as well as research on courthouses. He practiced law for 27 years, serving twelve years as States Attorney, and seventeen years as presiding judge of the First Judicial Circuit.
Judge Rusch is a recipient of the Richard Cropp Award for amateur historians from the Augustana College Center for Western Studies. He is currently working on a biography of Judge Jefferson Kidder who was involved in politics in Vermont and Minnesota before coming to Vermillion, Dakota Territory in 1865 as a Federal Judge appointed by Abraham Lincoln. Kidder also served as Territorial Delegate to Congress and was the leader of the movement to establish the University of Dakota at Vermillion.

Norma Wilson, Vermillion poet author and USD Professor Emeritus, will read and discuss her environmental poetry from a recent book Under the Rainbow, as well as her collaboration with Nancy Losacker in an exhibition Rivers, Wings and Sky, for which they received a South Dakota Arts Council grant. Nancy Losacker will participate in the discussion of their collaborative project. Copies of Norma Wilson’s books will be available for sale and signing at the event.
