The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library is pleased to announce that it will celebrate National Library Week 2015 (April 12-18, 2015) with an exciting line-up of events for all ages. This year’s theme is “Unlimited possibilities @ your library®.”

celebrate

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – participate.

Beginning Monday, April 13th at 3:30 pm, the library will host the Teen Art Club as they share their newfound knowledge of graphic novels and skills with the public. Look for their poetic chalk creations to emerge over the afternoon out on the sidewalks in front of the library!
On Tuesday, April 14th from 3:30-5 pm the library will host a reception in the children’s area to reveal new artworks. Among the works showcased will be the brilliant new mosaic created in October by Vermillion artist Nancy Losacker, with the assistance of area 4th and 5th graders. The creation of this work was generously sponsored by the Edith B. Siegrist Library Board of Trustees, with support provided by the South Dakota Arts Council with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism and State Development, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Wednesday, April 15th will bring the opportunity for patrons and community members to drop in and sign the Declaration for the Right to Libraries. The Declaration for the Right to Libraries is an initiative of the American Library Association designed to build the public will and sustained support for America’s right to libraries of all types – academic, special, school, and public. We declare and affirm our right to quality libraries -public, school, academic, and special – and urge you to show your support by signing your name.
LEGO lovers of all ages won’t want to miss our big LEGO party on Thursday, April 16th, from 3:30-5 pm. Expect great treats, lego-shaped candies, and of course, LEGO-building challenges!
Friday afternoon, April 17th, from 1-5 pm patrons can drop by for a ‘sneak peek’ of our wonderful children’s art exhibition, showcasing works created by area children during library Storytime and Storytime outreach sessions, and afterschool art clubs. The works will be up for sale during the next day.
The library will cap off the week with the biggest bash saved for Saturday, April 18th! The Children’s Art Show & Sale, a fundraiser for the Summer Reading Program, will be open from 10 – 4 pm. From 2-3 pm, we will honor special library volunteers during a Volunteer Appreciation reception, unveil a special new #librarylove promotion, screen the video of a fun and unexpected teen event, and end the afternoon with door prizes!
