Food for Fines 2020

During this holiday season, the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library will once again be accepting donations of unopened non-perishable food items for the Vermillion Food Pantry! Through the month of December, patrons who have accumulated overdue fines, with the exception of replacement fees, will be able to have up to $15 of those fines waived in exchange for donations of much-needed items such as non-perishable foods or personal care products. Even if you do not have fines to pay, we will still be accepting donations for anyone who wants to contribute. (We haven’t been charging overdue fines since March, so this may be the case for many of you. Please still consider donating!!!)

Needed items include:

(Grains: Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta) rice and rice mixes; canned pasta; noodle mixes; dry noodles and pasta; macaroni and cheese; cold cereals; bran cereal; shredded wheat; infant cereal; hot cereal mixes; oatmeal; bread, muffin, and pancake mixes; whole-grain crackers; granola bars; graham crackers; flour; bread

(Protein Foods: Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, and Nuts) canned tuna; canned chicken; canned beef stew; canned salmon; bean soups; canned or dried beans; baked beans; canned chili; peanut butter or other nut butters; canned or packaged nuts

(Vegetables) canned vegetables; vegetable soup; canned tomato products; spaghetti sauce; baby-food vegetables; V-8 juice

(Dairy: Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese) infant formula; nonfat dry milk; instant breakfast drinks; shelf-stable (UHT) milk; cream soups

(Fruit) canned fruit; raisins; applesauce; dried fruit; baby-food fruit; fruit leather (100% fruit); canned or bottled 100% juice

(Oils and Condiments) vegetable oil; salad dressing; syrup; jelly and jam; honey; sugar; mayonnaise; ketchup; mustard

(Extras) tea; coffee; spice

(Paper Products) toilet paper; paper towels; napkins; tissues

(Soap Products) hand soap; laundry detergent; liquid dish soap; cleaning products

(Personal Care Products) shampoo; toothpaste; toothbrushes; shaving cream; razors; deodorant; feminine hygiene products; baby diapers (all sizes); wet wipes

(Other Pantry Needs) gift cards of any amount to Hy-Vee or Walmart

This Friday

Eric Model will present a “Journeys into” program that explores the offbeat, off the beaten path, overlooked, and forgotten – places, people, events, and stories of authentic Americana “beyond the interstate”. This virtual Journeys into Hidden America presentation has been customized for our South Dakota and Vermillion residents, but can be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in learning about (and even sharing their own stories of) the gems of Americana.

Adult Take ‘n Make Craft: Recycled Book Turkey

Learn how to make a recycled book turkey! A few free take home kits will be available at the Vermillion Public Library, while supplies last.

Materials needed:

  • 1 hardcover book
  • 1 cardstock turkey head
  • Scissors or x-acto knife
  • Hot glue gun (or regular Elmer’s glue if you’re patient)

Virtual Story Time

Miss Amanda reads “Head to Toe” by Eric Carle. We are celebrating Children’s Book Week with a Story Time with some extra special library faces!

Also, stop by the library to pick up a take ‘n make kit for Story Time aged children to go along with this story time. These take home kits can be picked up inside the door with the curbside pick up books. Supplies are limited.

Children’s Book Week

The Book Hunt begins today! Stop by the library and pick up a game sheet, or download and print one out here. They can also be picked up from various locations around downtown. Fill out this game sheet by traveling around downtown Vermillion and looking for children’s book covers! Mark where you found the corresponding book on the game sheet, and turn it in to the library by November 16th to be entered to win a prize! The whole card does not need to be filled out, but every five correct answers does give you an extra entry into the contest! Celebrate #BookWeek2020 with the Vermillion Public Library!

Writing Memoirs to Remember (Zoom Recording)
