The Vermillion Area Arts Council is partnering with the VPL to bring their annual Messy Hands Summer Art Camp back to town!

Registration is required: https://forms.gle/HH1CXukoiYmL4KeV8

For over ten years, the Vermillion Area Arts Council’s Messy Hands Summer Art Camp has been the premiere hands-on, visual arts event for kids and teens each summer. This year the excitement continues in a new way. With the generous support of the South Dakota Arts Council, Vermillion Public Library, City of Vermillion, and private donors, Messy Hands Summer Camp is now a take-home kit!

Perfect for budding artists aged 5 & up, Messy Hands Summer Camp kits will contain 10-12 visual art projects ranging from art principles & fundamentals to simple ceramics, mosaic, watercolor, and even digital photography! Most materials needed to complete each project once will be included, along with follow-along handouts, and resource lists with links to tutorial videos made by our very own Messy Hands Summer Camp instructors. We even have some exciting, socially-distanced collaborations planned!

Many children 8 & up should be able to complete the projects independently; those younger with just a little supervision and guidance.

Kits will be available for pick up at the Vermillion Public Library in early July. All registrants will be contacted with specific pick-up times.

In order to be able to accommodate as many families as possible, a $25 per kit donation is suggested (kit is approx. $50 value). Payments may be in the form of a check made out to the VAAC and mailed to P.O. Box 484, Vermillion, SD 57069

SRP: Teen Fridays

2020 Summer Reading Program:

Register for Teen Fridays at bit.ly/vplteen!

For this program, we’ll post activities for teens to do throughout the week.

Teens can join Mackenzie for a short Zoom meeting at 1:30 pm on Fridays where she will explain the week’s activities, answer any questions the participants may have, and chat.

Activities include:

Verm the Gnome, a new series of interactive fairy tales where a gnome named Verm reads a different fairy tale to his grandchildren each week. The players (as the grandchildren) can cut in and change the story, to Verm’s exasperation.

We will also be posting a new art activity each week, encouraging teens to draw or create in any way they want. An email address will be provided where you can ask questions or find out how to access art supplies.

The last activity will be a short quiz over fantasy, fairy tales, or mythology! More details will be posted as the event nears.

If you haven’t already done so, register for the VPL’s Summer Reading Program read-tracking platform, READsquared: http://vermillionlibrary.readsquared.com.
